I
was frustratingly going through the footages of my short film which I had completed.
I had informed Prajakt about my recent failure as Director during shooting of
film but he insisted I must go through footages & edit it by myself. He gave
me some tutorials on how to operate FCPX; he said Editing is misunderstood as
mere arrangement of scenes, but it’s something more creative and artistic.
“Aadesh,
did you know humans have excellent quality of never failing. Either they win or
learn lesson to be better for next time. It’s a win-win situation” Prajakt said
sitting next to me when I was busy going through tutorials.
“Nope.
I don’t think so, you see my work & you will realize how wrong you were” I
replied taking notes on notepad.
“Oh
come on, don’t be so harsh on yourself. You did a good job considering it was
your 1st time” Pj said patting my back.
“Pj
yaar please don’t console me, I know I am a bull & just delivered a shit” I
retorted giving no space for his compliments.
“You
don’t believe me? Come here have a look at our first short film” he was already
on his way to search it.
He
searched 2-3 hard disks. Was about to yell & throw things here & there
but found it. He called me & others into his room. He played his first
short film “BEST LANGUAGE” & we all watched it in rapt attention. No words
were said, no exchange of looks, no ohhs & ahhs. At the end of film, I felt
my goose bumps on skin, had tears ready to drop but controlled it. It was an
amazing experience. I was so choked with emotions that I could not respond
instantly.
“So
how is it? You like it?”Pj asked looking at our faces. I had my answer in
tears.
“Dude,
its super duper hit. A masterpiece I must say”, I replied pressing hard his
hands. “I must suicide if you think I am better than you were at first short
film”.
“Oh
come on!! Don’t do over the top appreciation. I know you are a writer &
good with words but I keep check on reality. It is not that good” he replied
looking at others.
“No
sir, it’s very good. We loved it” was unanimous reply of Kanha & Rupesh,
our flat mates.
“How,
When & Why you guys made this short film” I inquired.
“Back
then we were having studies & practice going simultaneously. I got this
idea of testing our skills, checking our ability to work without plan and we
went out for shoot. We had 1 7D & 60D cam, hand-made shoulder rig. We were
travelling, shooting anything we find interesting. Then one of us saw this
school of deaf & dumb students. I knew instantly I got my subject &
went there, took all necessary permission & rolled camera. The kids were
far better than any actor I had seen” Prajakt’s reply was shocking to me.
“That’s
simply amazing, hats off to you guys for making such a beautiful film, so
emotional, meaningful movie without words.”
“Me,
Sanket & our team have special importance of this film. We are extremely
proud of what we did & that’s why I insist we all must do things we will be
proud to share it with others. This experience made us grow exponentially.
After this we came to know how camera captures emotion without expressing a
single word.”
“That’s
clearly seen.”
“Getting
back to my point we did this to check our talent, ability, study & put
ourselves under scanner of quality. Since then I have told hundreds of students
to write, shoot, direct & edit 1 film before they go for any audition or
interview. It’s very important to grind yourself through this experience”, Pj
explained his point.
“Yeah,
but what if you don’t want to concentrate on one thing only & don’t want to
get diverted by other aspects?” I had my obvious question.
“You
won’t die if you work this way in one movie and then you can continue with your
specialty afterwards. It’s my experience that doing everything in one short
film will only improves your skills and sharpens your knowledge. Rest is your
wish & will” Pj laughs looking at my sorry face.
“Ok
bro! Point noted. And I have done this though failed miserably”, my sarcasm was
back.
“Not
failed miserably but lesson learn smartly” Pj replied with much deep
intentions which I could feel in eyes.
BEST LANGUAGE- a short film is highly recommended to all of you, just to know how this guys has started their journey with such a meaningful & amazing expression of emotions
